Landscape Lighting Techniques: Silhouetting

What exactly is Silhouetting?

A silhouette is the outline of a shape, generally filled in solidly with black. As a lighting technique, silhouetting involves shining an uplight against a wall, behind an object, so that the object is seen in shadow and in contrast to the lighted wall.  It is not among the most common of techniques, as the elements must be right, but it is stunning when used.

This lighting technique is very useful as it allows the lighting designer to illuminate a building or wall while simultaneously drawing attention to the object in front of it, even though that object is not lit. In fact, BECAUSE it is not lit. Palm-style trees, ornamental grasses, and other plants with strong outlines, as well as some statues, work well with silhouetting. The technique creates a dramatic effect when done right.

Lighting designers have many tools in their design belt to create the effect you desire. Maybe silhouetting would work in your landscape—give us a call and we can show you our creativity to give you the breathtaking results you desire.
