Landscape Lighting And Poor Connections. That’s A Recipe For Frustration

Have you ever had a headphone or charger cord that bent and split so that the wires inside have begun to fray? What happens? The connection no longer works consistently. You’re singing along and suddenly Bruno Mars drops out and you’re left singing Uptown Funk all by yourself. Awkward! Or you plug in your phone to charge it and come back to 0% battery. Frustrating.

When connection issues happen with landscape lighting, lights don’t illuminate–sometimes one, sometimes the whole system. Even the highest quality fixtures cannot overcome poor connections. There are proper materials and techniques, but they do NOT include simply twisting wires together in a regular wire nut (don’t do it!) or even worse, just twisting them together with electrical tape (really don’t do it!). Wire connections are buried in the dirt. Dirt always has moisture (especially when it rains!) which can seep in to a poor connection. Moisture and electricity are not friends—wires corrode, and short circuits happen. Don’t believe me? Just watch! (Last Uptown Funk reference, I promise).

When an outage occurs because of poor connections, we can repair it. But why spend the money for a lighting system repair when it costs the same to do it right the first time (not to mention the inconvenience of the outage and repair)?

If you decide to have a lighting system installed, please check the credentials of the company you are considering. Certifications mean something. Ask them about their materials and techniques. A certified landscape lighting technician has the proper materials and the knowledge of how to make the connections last as long as possible so your lights shine beautifully for as long as possible.
