Stokesdale, NC- Architectural and Landscape Lighting
PROJECT SUMMARY
This sprawling landscape covered a few acres and was originally designed and installed by Southern Exposure Landscape Management. After the landscape was completed, Southern Lights also had the privilege of creating the lighting designs for the property. This client wanted the architecture of the home to be pronounced with enough illumination, but not to over shadow the landscape plant material, pond, and water features of the property.
LIGHTING FOCUS
The first area we focused on was the architecture and front elevations of the home. This created the back drop to everything else. There are no street lights in the neighborhood which is why the client wanted to highlight a lot of the property to give a sense of size as well as security. Areas of concern were the garage (point of entry into the home) for security, so special attention was paid here. Perimeter lighting was also a focus for Southern Lights. Fortunately there were large established trees on the property for us not only up light, but this also gave us an opportunity to create some “moonlighting” effects into the landscape. Incorporating different fixtures and techniques makes for a more natural lighting design. This also helped provide some balance and sense of space:

LIGHTING DESIGN
Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY. and should always start with a design. Properties of this size sometimes need to be designed to be installed in more than 1 phase. Phase 1 focused on the home’s architectural features, where as Phase II was more focused on the trees, plants, and water features. Due to the large property and lack of light, we chose to illuminate the garage from the soffits of the home. By going to the eaves of the home, it allowed us to not only illuminate the garage’s architecture, but also to put more ambient light on to the driveway giving a better sense of safety and security lighting:

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. This meant we needed to right size the transformer from the beginning. Loading the transformer accurately is not only important for balancing the load, but also from a safety standpoint:
- Right sizing the transformer during Phase I to account for the future growth of Phase II and III.
- Routing and labeling additional wire for future lighting.
- Installing lighting fixtures in existing water features.
