PROJECT SUMMARY

This lighting design took a different path than we normally take with phased lighting. Rather than putting a lot of emphasis on the homes architecture, these clients wanted the drama of bring their backyard plants to life at night. Driveway lighting was important as well to help provide the Security Lighting necessary. During the design phase, Southern Lights provided the road map and detailed lighting designs for this client capturing this beautiful setting at night creating the most ideal landscape lighting scenes.

LIGHTING DESIGN

Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. Subtlety in this lighting design was important. Southern Lights didn’t want to overwhelm the area with light taking away from the drama of the space. Specifically choosing distinct nooks and crannies to place light fixtures on this property were critical to the lighting design. Even though the front of this home’s architecture is not currently lit, Southern Lights designed the system for future growth.

The driveway was particularly dark on this property due to the large trees surrounding it. To the homeowners, the trees made the driveway feel dark and crowded, but for our lighting design expert, Pete Bryant, these trees were in the perfect location. Fortunately the trees helped us create the perfect balance of light without feeling like the floodlights had just been flipped on. Southern Lights installed tree lights in the mature trees creating a great “moonlighting” effect and providing a great deal of security lighting without the harshness of flood lighting. We use fixtures sparingly on this property and chose not to highlight every tree and shrub helping to give some drama to the lighting design.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME

Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Understanding the clients needs and explaining why we need fixtures in specific areas sometimes can be tricky if the client has never seen great outdoor landscape lighting. This project required a mock-up before the installation of this landscape lighting system was finalized allowing for some adjustments Getting light to the right place in the front and backyard took some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location.
