Outdoor Landscape Lighting in Greensboro, NC 27408
PROJECT SUMMARY
Lots of great outdoor living spaces in this backyard. This outdoor landscape lighting design incorporated illumination of the deep backyard trees, gazebo, deck, and architecture of the front and back of the home.
Professional outdoor lighting was desired to help enhance this properties appearance and make the backyard patio function after hours when the sun goes down.
This backyard had some definite “WOW” factor before landscape lighting was added and now has given this space a whole new use.
During the design phase, Southern Lights provides the road map and detailed lighting designs for our clients, capturing beautiful settings at night, creating the most ideal landscape lighting effects.
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING FOCUS
The initial focus of the lighting design was to illuminate the front of the home and the backyard deck. After a night time demonstration, it was clear to the homeowners that they wanted to extend their night time viewing area deeper into their backyard.
The outdoor living space around the deck became a definite focal feature as well. Meandering walkways and water features helped give the space some dimension and highlight the existing landscape naturally.
After highlighting many of the large trees, the viewpoint from the back of the house and deck was enhanced dramatically creating a more natural feel of the outdoor lighting. Also bringing light to the Gazebo structure found in the far right corner of the property helped draw attention further into the backyard.
Also important to the homeowners, was to ensure that the security lighting was consistent with the landscape lighting around the home. Southern Lights wants to provide enough for the space, but not too much where the effect is washed out and the drama is lost.
When talking with our clients, Southern Lights always tries to listen for what’s most important from our client’s perspective. In this case and in our company motto of (Safety. Security. SERENITY), All three of these focuses played an equal role in these lighting designs:
- Safety lighting was needed to address the elevation changes throughout the property and along the long winding driveway.
- Security lighting was needed to help illuminate a very dark back and side yard and keep intruders out.
- SERENITY lighting is always needed to give the space and property a clean and natural design during evening hours. Tying the function with the beauty is always our goal.

LANDSCAPE LIGHTING DESIGN
Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. The front walkway again was a main focus for these clients.
This outdoor lighting system is built to last and to add on to. Creating a lighting design, that is scaleable is important to Southern Lights. This property is ready for additional lights that may be desired in the future without having to re-wire and re-do any of the landscape lighting. Southern Lights has the opportunity to work with a lot of amazing clients and this couple was no different. Their love for their home shined through in their appreciation for the beautifully illuminated landscape lighting on this property.
Adding outdoor landscape lighting and giving our client remote access through a smartphone made all the difference for their security lighting.
These clients realized early on that this property and landscape really needed the full attention of an expert landscape lighting designer. Allowing Southern Lights the ability to be creative with the lighting design and to have some freedom of fixture selection and location, proved to be a great decision.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME
Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Getting light to the right place takes some skill and time to coordinate installing wire to the desired fixture location.
The property was heavily wooded in the backyard so selecting the right trees to highlight was important. Some pruning was necessary to get the desired lighting effect into the canopies of the trees and into the plant material as well.
The existing landscape is fairly mature, so keeping the plant material properly pruned will be an ongoing maintenance need for these clients to keep the lighting design in tact for years to come and to reduce unnatural shadows on the architecture. This client ultimately trusted Southern Lights with the lighting designs allowing us to provide them with the most ideal landscape lighting effect with the best lighting fixtures for the space and structures. We think it turned out pretty awesome.
