LIGHTING FOCUS

This client knew what they wanted before we showed up… they thought. This couple had seen down lighting in the neighborhood and thought it looked unique and different from everything being lit from the ground. Architectural Lighting on the home, Safety on the steps, and security around the garage was our goal:

LIGHTING DESIGN

Ideal landscape lighting should evoke Safety. Security. SERENITY and should always start with a design. So the lighting design started with down lights from the soffits of the home at first, per the client’s request. Southern Lights explained to them by only utilizing soffit lights, the peaks of their home will be dark and won’t fully capture their front elevation home like they thought it would. This project evolved after we mocked up some additional lighting that would highlight the eaves and let our clients see the effect before purchasing the additional light fixtures. Well, seeing is believing. They quickly agreed that the peaks needs to be illuminated. The backyard began with basic step lighting in the deck staircase to highlight and provide safety for their family and guests as they would come up and down into their backyard. While Southern Lights lighting designer was there, the client mentioned they were avid ping pong players and would like the ability to have lighting over their table tennis for tournaments and family fun. Naturally, we obliged and gave them a great solution that they can control separately from the rest of their landscape lighting system.

HURDLES TO OVERCOME

Designing an ideal landscape lighting system takes planning. Sometimes, the hardest part of our job is to communicate what good landscape lighting looks like and how it is achieved. Preconceived notions of what will work or look good don’t always come to fruition. It’s great when our clients have a style and know what they are specifically looking for, but sometimes as lighting designers and professionals, we need to help give guidance, education, and direction to our clients.
